Alentejo Mastiff

The Alentejo Mastiff, also known as the Rafeiro do Alentejo, is a large and powerful breed hailing from Portugal. It is an ancient livestock guardian dog, primarily used to protect herds from predators. Alentejo Mastiffs have a massive and muscular build, with males standing around 27-30 inches (68-76 cm) tall and weighing between 110-132 pounds (50-60 kg). Females are slightly smaller. They have a dense, weather-resistant coat that can be short or moderately long. Alentejo Mastiffs are known for their calm, confident, and independent nature. They are highly loyal to their families and have a natural instinct to protect. Due to their size and protective instincts, they are better suited for outdoor living in rural or suburban areas with ample space. They require consistent training and socialization from an early age to ensure they become well-adjusted adult dogs. Alentejo Mastiffs are generally docile and gentle with their family members, but they can be aloof with strangers. They make devoted and trustworthy companions for those who can provide them with the exercise, mental stimulation, and attention they need.
